Children holding a sausage on their nose to make each other laugh and be humorous

‘Knock knock,’

‘Who’s there?’

‘Poo!’

‘Poo who?’

‘Poo you!’

Not laughing?

I bet your four-year-old would be.

Why?

Okay, let’s discover how it only takes a sausage to make your child more popular and why rude jokes are actually helpful for your child’s happiness in life.

Why it’s Good to Laugh

Poo, bum, farting and boogie jokes are a child’s favourite. They are the taboo ones they aren’t supposed to say in front of grandma.

Anything that catches your child by surprise, is novel, unexpected, rude, different and mischievous, is going to make them laugh.

This is a good thing because laughter has many benefits, such as

Boosting the immune system and promoting longevity.

Managing pain and releasing feel-good chemicals in the body.

Building resilience, lowering stress levels and reducing anxiety.

Humour is a great stress buster that’s useful in challenging times.

Okay, no one feels like laughing when something sad has happened. Yet, it’s in those moments children need some light relief the most.

And children who can make other children laugh are popular, happier, and healthier.

Despite its importance for children’s health and learning, they don’t include laughter in any early year’s curriculum or in schools.

That’s baffling!

‘There’s a Sausage on Your Nose.’

Recently, I watched in awe as nine children screeched and squealed at the dinner table while eating tea.

One child was saying,

‘There’s a sausage on your nose.’

And all the other children joined in with,

‘There’s a sausage in your ear,’ and various other places.

I didn’t want to miss this opportunity.

So, instead of telling them to be quiet and eat, I allowed them the freedom to use their imaginations, have fun, and feel good while socializing together (I even joined in!).

But playtime is not just reserved for your child, it’s good for you too!

Play encourages laughter, known for its healing and anti-aging properties, a useful side effect for us grownups. It also releases chemicals in the body, such as endorphins, which reduce stress and tension. That’s why ‘Recreation’ is part of the U URSELF Routine I use when coaching parents.
