January is almost over, and let’s be honest—most (if not all) of our New Year’s resolutions are nothing more than a distant memory. Instead of smashing goals, you’re eating pizza, washing it down with wine, and binge-watching yet another Netflix series.
And you know what?
That’s okay.
New Year’s resolutions are practically designed to be broken. Don’t beat yourself up over it—it’s all about timing.
We get so caught up in planning what we’ll stop doing in the new year. We fantasise about how daily gym sessions will transform us into bikini body babes by summer. We dream about all the money we’ll save by quitting smoking or drinking, and we plan exactly how we’ll spend it.
But we focus more on the idea than the doing.
Yes, we try. We buy vitamins, fill the fridge with fruit and veg, and even sign up for a gym membership (which we may or may not use). We do all the prep, telling ourselves, This is it. This is the year I change.
But then the January blues set in. The kids start driving you up the wall, your partner annoys you, and work feels like the same old grind.
Before you know it, there’s a bottle of wine in your Tesco trolley a week into January.
Sound familiar?
It’s not just you. The people and things that stressed you out last year—the kids, the boss, the partner—haven’t magically changed just because you’ve decided to quit booze. In fact, without your usual go-to stress relief, they seem even worse. So, of course, you fall back into old habits.
And let me tell you, there’s zero judgment here. I’m basically describing myself. I’ve been that person pouring leftover Christmas booze down the sink, feeling virtuous… only to re-buy it two weeks later with tears in my eyes.
But this year, something feels different.
Why? Because This Year, I’m Just Doing It!
I’m not announcing that I’m giving up alcohol. I’m not patting myself on the back for counting down the days of abstinence until February 1st when I can “celebrate” by drinking again.
Nope. This time, I’m skipping all the drama. I’m just doing it.
And wherever you are on your New Year, New You journey—whether you’re smashing your goals or have already fallen off the wagon—it’s okay. There’s no rule that says change has to start on January 1st and stay perfect from then on.
Just start now.
Whatever it is you want to do—eat healthier, exercise more, quit a habit, or start a new one—start with the next small choice. Grab the healthiest thing you have available right now. Then do it again, choice by choice, hour by hour, day by day.
That’s how change happens. You don’t have to overhaul your life overnight; you just need to start. The more you choose your new habit, the more it becomes a part of who you are.
For Me, It’s Working
I’ve promised myself to just do it, and so far, so good.
Anyone who knows me knows I love my food and a drink—especially on a Saturday night. But here I am, writing this blog with an apple and a bottle of water instead. And for the first time, I don’t feel like I’m missing out.
I’m not depriving myself. I’m not counting down the days until I can drink again. I’m just doing it, and I feel good. Really good.
