How to Stay Focused on your New Years Goals and Resolutions
Jan 17, 2024At the beginning of the year we often reflect and look for ways to improve our lives. Whether it’s a resolution to change something, or to reach a certain goal.
But don’t beat yourself up if you’ve already given in to binging on burgers, Netflix, wine and chocolate. Most New Year’s resolutions and goals barely last a couple of weeks.
The secret to getting back on track is to do just that.
Get Back on Track.
Instead of telling yourself you’ve blown it, (so you may as well carry on) look at it as a blip. We all come across challenges and obstacles when we’re trying to change. Our subconscious mind loves our old familiar habits, even if they are bad for us. The subconscious does not discriminate, it just wants to keep you comfortable. If that means on the sofa eating chips, then that’s what it will try its best to get you to do.
And before you know it, you’re making up those excuses to justify breaking your resolutions or sabotaging your goals. There’s no way you can not have a glass of wine tonight after the stressful day you’ve had in work or there’s no time to cook a healthy meal for dinner, it’ll have to be take- out tonight.
If that’s you you’re not alone.
But now you’re aware of what you’re doing to yourself you have a choice. Carry on with your old unhelpful habits or get back on track. Its very empowering to know you have the choice and that can be a game changer for you this year.
Either choose to accept that actually you don’t really want to change or that goal isn’t really worth the effort and then focus on other things.
Quitting’s isn't always such a bad thing though. If you realise you don’t want the things you thought you did and you choose to quit as an option, you’ve gained clarity.
And that’s enlightening and empowering.
For example, Jayne a full- time mum longed to start her own consulting business. She had spent thousands on training courses and seminars, marketing and advertising. Not to mention all the time and energy she’d invested. She loved designing her own logo, she successfully secured her trademark and she had a steady stream of clients. It was all going perfectly. But after six months she was miserable and came to me for hypnotherapy for anxiety. She was very competent and she was getting good results for her clients but she felt so unfulfilled. And she missed her kids. When I told her she had a choice she couldn’t believe it. ‘How?’ she asked ‘I’ve invested so much time and energy into this business and my children are settled in with their childminder now, what can I do?
And with that she started another business from home which she absolutely loves, making candles and wax melts.
For her, quitting her consulting business was the best choice. It wasn’t the easiest thing to do though.
We assume quitting is the easy option, but it isn’t.
But you made a resolution to change something in your life for a good reason. And you set your goal for some reason too?
Ask yourself why?
That why is what will help you get back on track and stay on track.
