As I sat down to reflect on why being a childminder and providing after-school care means so much to me, I couldn’t help but get emotional—even shed a few tears. It’s not just a job; it’s a privilege, a calling, and a chance to make a difference in children’s lives.

FREEPLAY PRIVILEGE

These days, life feels so different for kids. Many spend their time online, their “best friend” often being a screen rather than another child. Gone are the days of simply knocking on a neighbour’s door to play, running wild in the street until the sun sets. Now, everything is planned and structured—extracurriculars, sports clubs, and organized activities. There’s little time left for the simple, magical joys of free play.

We see the impact of this shift every day. Kids aren’t learning the same vital social skills that come from playing freely: how to resolve conflict, share, and take turns. They miss out on moments like sitting around the table together, laughing over a meal, and building bonds that grow naturally with time.

CHILDCARE MATTERS

This is why our job matters so deeply. Childcare is more than just a safe place to stay while parents’ work. It’s a space where children can:

  • Build real, meaningful friendships.
  • Learn to navigate challenges like sharing, compromising, and problem-solving.
  • Experience the joy of creativity, whether through imaginative play or simply getting “bored” and discovering how to entertain themselves without a screen.

Over the past 20 years, we’ve had the privilege of seeing how transformative this environment can be. My own children were raised in this childcare setting. They were the youngest, the middle, and the oldest child at different times, learning from others, teaching the younger ones, and growing into confident, empathetic people. It wasn’t always easy—they loved it some days and hated it others—but now they tell me how much they value those experiences and want the same for their own children someday. That speaks volumes.

But this story isn’t about us—it’s about the kids and the families we’ve had the honour to care for. Our role is simply to create a nurturing space where friendships can blossom, creativity can thrive, and love can grow.

Rated Excellent for Children’s Care and Development

Last month, we were overjoyed to receive an Excellent Rating for Children’s Care and Development from CIW at our inspection. It was a moment of pure validation for everything we pour our hearts into. After saying goodbye to one wonderful group of families earlier this year and starting fresh with new, amazing little ones and parents, this recognition felt like a warm hug during a challenging time.

We want to thank every single family, past and present, for trusting us with your children and becoming part of our extended family. You’ve brought so much love, joy, and energy into our lives. And to our own family, thank you for always supporting us, even when life gets chaotic.

This work isn’t just what we do—it’s who we are. And we’re so grateful to continue this journey, helping children build connections, explore their creativity, and thrive.

With all our love and gratitude,
Em & Paul x
