Worst-Case Thinking
Do you lie awake at night, your mind spiralling into endless worst-case scenarios?
What if the kids get hurt or sick?
What if I can’t pay the mortgage or rent next month?
What if I fail as a mum?
What if something happens to someone I love?
What if that ambulance siren is for someone I know?
And the ‘what-ifs’ just keep coming!!!
Let me ask you:
- Do you feel like it’s your job to worry about everything?
- Do you feel uneasy when your child isn’t with you?
- Do worst-case scenarios play on a loop in your mind?
Those thoughts aren’t always rational, are they? Often, they feel more like nightmares. And trust me, I get it. Even though my own two children are now young adults, I still get those moments of anxiety.
The ‘what-ifs’ and the “... then this will happen...” scenarios used to pull me out of the present and send me spiralling into another dimension. My imagination conjured stories, some outlandish, others painfully believable.
I was always on edge, always on guard, especially when my kids were out of sight. And it was utterly exhausting.
Because being a mum is a worrying business and we try anything we can to prevent that dreaded mum guilt.
If you are anything like me and the majority of other mums I know, you probably even worry when things are going well—wondering why you’re not worrying and what’s about to go wrong.
The truth is, your brain is playing tricks on you. It’s trying to overprotect you.
It tells you to worry when your child is out of sight, imagining all the possible dangers they could face, as if that worrying will somehow protect them.
Your mind convinces you that worrying in advance gives you control. It whispers that if you dare relax, and something does go wrong, you’ll feel guilty and to blame.
Your mind’s intentions are good, but often they manifest in ways that are not helpful.
Your mind tries to send your body signals to get your attention and make you aware. A bit like pain when you’ve been injured. The signs could be anxiety when you don’t feel in control of situations or of those people you love.
Now you can’t stop your kids from ever going out of your sight and living their lives, but you can change your perceptions and how you feel.
But it takes practice to train your mind, and the easiest way to do this is through meditation and hypnosis.
Often, you aren’t aware of why you think and feel a certain way. Your subconscious mind runs your life, including your thoughts and behaviours on auto pilot, based on old learnt programming from your childhood. Most of the stuff that now dictates how you think and feel was a seed planted many, many, years before that you have no conscious recollection of. That’s why it’s so difficult to overcome certain fears and anxiety. And why trying to change them consciously is pointless. But when you can work on the unconscious and the conscious part of your mind together, peace of mind can be found in no time.
WHY WORRY?
If that’s you, don’t worry, that was me too and we are in good company. Brené Brown also shares quite openly about her own experiences with this mum catastrophising, too.
Its not a bad thing to worry but if you spend the majority of your time and mental energy worrying, you will eventually get burnt out.
Worrying won’t prevent anything. But the more burnt-out and on edge you are, the more likely things will go wrong.
So, making it a new year’s resolution to worry less and relax more is a major muma goal for 2025. Anyhow, 85 per cent of what we worry about never actually happens, anyway. And if you’re a catastrophist, I would say that’s more like 99 per cent.
As Mark Twain once said, ‘‘ I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened.’
Deep down, you know your worries are irrational, but anxiety is a cycle you’ve learned to live with and accept. You may not have labelled it anxiety before now. You may just have thought you were an overprotective parent. But the underlying issue is not what may happen or even what will happen. It’s your fear that you won’t have the ability to cope with it.
That right there may be a revelation to you?
Here’s another one.
Face your fears and what you fear disappears.
Most of our fears in life persist because it’s not the thing happening that we’re afraid of, it’s the feeling of fear itself.
You fear, fear.
So, you try to stop it.
You try to control everything, but what happens is you suffer with it and you allow it to control you. Taking back your self-control means first you become aware of what’s happening in the moment, then you face that fear. In the hypnosis audio/video in my chaos-to-calm-mini-course this is what you’ll learn to do, to desensitise that fear.
These worrying thoughts are exhausting and isolating. They make you feel powerless, always bracing for disasters that may never come. It’s like carrying a storm in your mind everywhere you go.
Sheer chaos.
